THE ULTIMATE ACCOLADES FOR FROZEN FOODS
Over the last 23 years, BFFF have run the ultimate new product awards event, which has become known as the ‘Oscars of the Frozen Food Industry’. The rationale for this highly prestigious awards scheme is to reward and recognise the terrific quality and product development in the frozen food market during the last year.
In 2010, the BFFF Retail Awards have been sponsored by the Yearsley Group who are leading the way in frozen food sales and logistics, providing your link in the cold chain.
The 2010 Catering Awards have been sponsored by SFC (Wholesale) Ltd. who provide the fast food take-away straight from your freezer.
The winners in the retail sector are decided by panels of consumers throughout the UK, who mark the products for appearance, taste, innovation, packaging, preparation instructions, likelihood of purchase and value for money. The BFFF Retail Awards represent ‘the people’s choice’ and many consumers have endured a very difficult two years through the credit crunch and the recession. However there is no doubt that consumers continue to be aspirational in their needs and that the frozen food sector is able to meet many of those aspirations.
The frozen food market has been in excellent growth for the last three years but is now just beginning to slow down. The latest market statistics kindly supplied by Kantar Worldpanel show the market is now worth a very impressive £5.1 billion and is still enjoying value growth at 1.6% year on year.
The catering products are judged by representatives of the Craft Guild of Chefs who, as executive chefs, catering managers and recipe developers, are expert in their field and uncompromising in their assessments of the entries. They are always impressed by products, which take the labour out of prestigious dishes, which normally require intensive preparation in the kitchen. In the foodservice sector, frozen foods, with their established logistical benefits, have gained still higher acceptance through clever, innovative ideas in both recipe formulation and preparation functionality as well as product sector insight. Backed by a deep understanding of the catering market, frozen foods continue to make significant progress in the foodservice sector as end users demand enhanced quality, recipe authenticity and significant labour-savings in the kitchen.
Information from Horizons Foodservice shows that the foodservice market is now worth £2.3 billion. Whilst foodservice has suffered significantly during the recession, some sectors of the market have continued to prosper with fish and chip shops being one of the big winners. Also, quick service restaurants have seen significant growth whilst hotels and corporate entertaining have endured a tough period. The products entered into the Catering Awards once again demonstrate the ingenuity, resourcefulness and determination of the industry to always meet and exceed consumers’ aspirations regardless of the economic conditions.
The future for the frozen food sector remains bright as consumers understand even better the locked in goodness, minimal waste and fantastic value that frozen offers.
