SMOKE FREE COUNTDOWN   
From 1st July 2007, England will join Wales and Scotland to be ‘smoke free’ when it will be against the law to smoke in virtually all enclosed public places, workplaces and public and work vehicles.  As many of you will be aware, new legislation relating to smoking was introduced in Scotland on the 26th March 2006 and more recently, Wales on 2nd April 2007.   more ...

REVISED ASBESTOS REGULATIONS TO COME IN TO FORCE ON    
13 NOVEMBER 2006
The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006, which were laid in Parliament on 20th October 2006, will come into force on 13 November 2006. The revised regulations will strengthen overall worker protection by reducing exposure limits and introducing mandatory training for work with asbestos. They will also simplify the regulatory regime and implement revisions to the EU Asbestos Worker Protection Directive.   more ...

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) decided in February 2005, to implement changes to occupational health and safety law and practice that arise from within the UK on only two dates each year and they have now extended this to legislation arising from Europe, wherever it is in their control to do so.   Obviously, if any critical legislation arises between these dates it will be implemented straightaway.   more ..

MANAGING WORKPLACE TRANSPORT RISK – A ROUTE MAP   
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has published a consultation paper on managing workplace transport risk.  The consultation runs until 22 September 2006.  The HSE says that it has been devising a cross-cutting guidance tool (called the route map) to help manage the risk involved in the use of workplace transport.  It notes that workplace transport is used in a great variety of situations and remains the second biggest cause of fatal injury in the workplace.   more ...

HSE has recently published its provisional annual injury statistics for the year 2003/4. These show that in food manufacture there are very significant injury reductions due to considerable effort by the industry since the joint HSE/food industry Recipe for Safety initiative commenced in 1990/91.
